This may be the most important—and most contradictory—question in all of destiny work. If everything is already fixed, why make an effort at all? If effort can change everything, why look at a birth chart? People who study Bazi often drift toward one of two extremes. The first is fatalism: “My chart is like this, so there is nothing I can do.” Relationships fail because of destiny. Money never grows because of destiny. Career problems become destiny too.

The second extreme promises the opposite: change your name, wear the right color, move an object, change a direction, perform a ritual, and your entire life can supposedly be rewritten. Both answers are too simple. The more interesting question is this: if we accept that every person begins life with conditions they did not choose, how much can still change on top of those conditions?

The first thing you cannot change is the fact that you have already been born

Inside the Bazi system, your year, month, day, and hour of birth do not happen twice. So “changing destiny” cannot literally mean replacing the original chart. You cannot choose a different season of birth. You cannot choose a different childhood. You cannot erase the family, era, and early conditions into which you arrived.

These are closer to starting conditions. Some people begin with more money, support, education, or social access. Others begin with less. Some tendencies appear very early. Different families and different eras place very different limits around what is initially possible. Acknowledging that is not the same as surrendering to fate.

It is simply acknowledging that human beings do not all begin from the same starting line.

The second thing that never stops changing is time

Why does traditional Bazi look at ten-year Luck Pillars and annual cycles if the birth chart alone already contains every answer? Because the system itself does not assume that one natal structure expresses itself in exactly the same way for eighty years. The natal chart is one layer. Time is another.

A quality that has no useful place at twenty may become a major advantage at forty. A relationship pattern may dominate certain years and become much quieter in another phase. So traditional Bazi already contains an important idea: the underlying structure may be relatively stable, while the way it expresses itself changes across time.

That does not mean the birth chart has been rewritten. It means the same map is being lived from a different position.

The I Ching was never a philosophy of staying exactly the same

The Xici commentary contains the famous line: “When something reaches its limit, it changes; through change it finds a way through; by finding a way through, it can endure.” The word translated here as “reaches its limit” does not simply mean being poor. It means a condition has been exhausted and the old method no longer works.

Traditional commentary in the Zhouyi Zhengyi develops the same logic: when a situation has reached its extreme, change becomes necessary; through change, movement becomes possible again. This is remarkably practical. A job has no room left. A way of earning money has hit a ceiling. A relationship keeps returning to the same unresolved conflict. If the conditions have changed but you insist on using the same strategy forever, that is not necessarily perseverance.

Sometimes it is simply failure to change when change has become necessary.

Another line from the I Ching is closer to real life than most “luck-changing” promises

The Wenyan commentary on the Kun hexagram says: “A family that accumulates goodness will have surplus blessings; a family that accumulates what is not good will have surplus misfortune.” If this is turned into “do good deeds and the universe will make you rich,” the idea has been badly distorted. A more useful modern reflection is that many life outcomes are cumulative.

Trust is built through repeated honesty. Professional reputation is built through repeated delivery. Wealth is shaped by years of saving, judgment, opportunity, and risk control. Skills, relationships, and credibility accumulate too. Many things that appear to happen “suddenly” were being built for a long time.

That means what you repeat today is already participating in the creation of your future.

So what can Bazi actually tell you?

It can help identify themes that repeat, areas where you tend to overextend, life periods when certain issues become louder, and forces that may function as support or strain inside the wider structure. What it cannot do is make your decisions for you. It cannot decide whether you should resign today, marry this person, make an investment, or forgive someone who has repeatedly harmed you.

Those decisions still require evidence, judgment, consequences, and choice. A useful destiny system should therefore make you more able to move, not less. It should help distinguish what is a condition from what is still a choice.

If something is “missing from my chart,” is it missing forever?

Not necessarily. In traditional language, “not present” may simply mean a certain force is not obvious in the natal chart. It may appear through later timing, or the corresponding capacity may be built in real life through environment, education, relationships, practice, or opportunity. Someone born without family resources can still build resources. Someone who was a poor communicator at twenty can become an exceptional communicator at forty. Someone who spent ten years in destructive relationships is not required to repeat the next ten in exactly the same way.

Bazi may help you recognize a pattern. A pattern is not a sentence.

Why does Meihua Yishu warn against rigidity?

In its discussion of divination, Meihua Yishu contains the instruction often summarized as: the key lies in flexible understanding; do not cling rigidly. Its original context is technical interpretation. But it is equally valuable for anyone using destiny systems today. Do not see one symbol and decide your whole life is trapped. Do not enter a favorable year and assume you cannot make a mistake. Do not hear “wealth luck is coming” and abandon risk discipline. Do not hear “marriage is difficult” and begin sabotaging a relationship that was actually capable of being repaired.

A serious destiny practice should increase judgment. It should not create obsession.

So can you change your destiny?

If by “change destiny” you mean replace the birth chart you were born with, then no. If you mean can the same starting conditions be lived into meaningfully different outcomes, then the answer is clearly more complicated than no. Environments change. People learn. Skills accumulate. Relationships change. Choices create consequences. Entire economies and technologies change the opportunities available to a person.

A more precise way to say it is this: You cannot choose your starting point again. But you continue to participate in how that starting structure is ultimately lived.

The real gift of destiny work is not an answer—it is a sense of position

Where am I now? Why have the same themes become so loud in recent years? Which patterns are long-term and which are temporary? What should I accept? What could I change, but have left untouched because I kept telling myself, “That is just my fate”? Those questions are more important than “When will I get rich?”

Because the first thing that changes when someone truly understands a pattern is often not the chart. It is this: the next time the same crossroads appears, they do not automatically make the same choice.
